The next Residence for a Bolivian Artist

is programmed for late 2022

Residential Programme

The residency programme at Gasworks will provide the opportunity for the selected Bolivian artist to research and develop new work while based in London. That will be also accompanied by other events and participatory workshops that allow direct engagement with the artist and their work. The programme has a duration of three months.

The selected artist will be able to use the time in London to draw on the wonderful resources that the city offers and which include public libraries and archives as well as many leading art institutions. Importantly, the artist will be exposed to the community environment at Gasworks that allows artists to meet and exchange ideas with their peers, other art professionals as well as the wider public. As such, the residency will include several, linked components that are:

  • Professional Development: The visiting artist will have the opportunity to experiment with new ideas and develop new work. Gaswork’s extensive knowledge and experience as well as international reputation will help provide the artist with contacts and networks that can help promote the visibility of their work visible in the professional community.

  • Public Programme: The visiting artist will be expected to participate in an events programme, talks, seminars, screenings, workshops and performances that aim to disseminate and contextualise their work while encouraging dialogue with the public.

  • Open Studios Exhibits: The residence will end with an Open Studio where the artist will show the work that has been produced during the time in London. This is an opportunity to exhibit to the UK audiences and receive feedback from art professionals and curators.

The Structure and Selection Process

The artists will be recruited through an “Open Invitation to Apply” which is to be advertised in local and national newspapers in Bolivia, through Kiosko (a member of Triangle Network), as well as through curators, writers and scholars and other contacts of the Trust.

The programme is open to artists working in all disciplines subject to some constraints dictated by Gaswork’s buildings and location (their studios are fairly small and, for instance, are not suited to stone carving and welding).  Priority will be given to emerging up to mid-career artists with high quality work who have not as yet had the opportunity to work in London.

The next residence will take place in late 2022. The “Open Invitation to Apply” will be issued in January 2022. Gasworks will set up a selection committee including a range of perspectives and relevant expertise. The Trust will join the selection committee but Gasworks will maintain influence over the final selection. The selection process will be completed by March 2022 so as to give sufficient time for Gasworks and the artist to establish connections, apply for visas and begin active development and promotion of the residency.

Once selected, the artist will be provided with private studio facilities and pastoral support during the residence. The accommodation is a shared residency house near to Gasworks where the artist will have a private bedroom and share the common areas with three other visiting artists.
